How garage-door safety sensors work
Photoelectric sensors typically sit near the floor on opposite sides of the door opening. One side sends a beam and the other receives it. During closing, interruption or a sensor-system fault can cause the opener to stop or reverse. The exact logic, indicator lights and diagnostic codes depend on the opener manufacturer and model.

1. Clean the lenses and clear the opening
Dust, cobwebs or debris can interfere with the optical path. Clean gently with a soft material and make sure stored items, trash cans, vehicle parts or landscaping tools are not crossing the beam. Also look for objects that move into the beam only when the door begins closing.
2. Check physical alignment
A bumped sensor bracket can point the units away from each other. Sensors should be securely mounted according to the opener instructions. Do not assume that twisting a sensor until a light appears is a complete repair if the bracket is loose or wiring is damaged.
3. Look for obvious wiring damage
Low-voltage sensor wires can be cut, pinched, pulled loose or damaged near staples and connection points. Visual inspection can reveal obvious problems, but electrical diagnosis should follow the manufacturer’s procedure. Disconnect power before service where instructed.
4. Intermittent problems and sunlight
If failure happens at a particular time of day, direct sunlight or changing environmental conditions may be relevant on some systems. A technician can confirm whether alignment, shielding permitted by the manufacturer, wiring or sensor replacement is appropriate rather than relying on improvised covers that interfere with operation.
When do sensors need replacement?
Replacement may be appropriate when a sensor is physically damaged, fails model-specific tests, has internal failure or cannot maintain reliable operation after mounting and wiring are corrected. Sensors should be compatible with the opener system; do not assume any photo-eye pair will work.
What if the sensors are fine?
A closing problem can also involve travel settings, track resistance, rollers, door balance, controls or opener electronics. If the sensor indicators appear normal but the door still reverses, broaden the diagnosis instead of repeatedly realigning the sensors.
